• Bits Per Second (Bps): How many bits sent and received every second(8 bits = 1byte = 1 alphabet). It means if we have 1BPS speed then it takes 8 sec for a letter to travel
  • Kilo Bits Per Second (Kbps): 1kbps = 1000 bits per second. When we say 2G internet, then the speed comes up to 384 kbps, that nearly 48 kilo bytes per second, that means 48,000 letters per second, this is great for text messages but not enough for at least web page loading
  • Mega Bits Per Second (Mbps): 1 Mbps = 1,000 Kbps = 1,00,000 bits per second. This makes the browsing smoother, as it’s a major bump from it’s predecessor
  • Giga Bits Per Second (Gbps): 1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps = 10 Million Kbps = 1 Billion bits per second. This level of speed is only used in High cloud utilities
  • Tera Bits Per Second (Tbps): 1 Tbps = 1,000 Gbps = 1,000,000 Mbps = 1,000,000,000 Kbps = 1 Trillion bits per second. At this point, this is not used in applications but only big tech company’s used it and apart from them it’s the speed that is only used by Internet backbone(fiber optic cables)
  • Peta Bits Per Second (Pbps): 1 Pbps = 1,000 Tbps = 1,000,000 Gbps = 1,000,000,000 Mbps = 1 Quadrillion bits per second. This is beyond anything used by anyone, even global infrastructure rarely reach this level. It’s not about the speed anymore, It is about global synchronization. At this point we don’t care about the distance, only thing we care about is how to keep the infrastructure stable and the data error-free
  • An Exhibit Per Second (Ebps): 1 Ebps = 1,000 Pbps = 1,000,000 Tbps = 1,000,000,000 Gbps = 1,000,000,000,000 Mbps = 1 Quintillion bits per second. At this speed we can download every youtube video ever uploaded in seconds. This and all other after this are just theoretical(in 2025) and no way near we need this speed, but may be used in future in fields such as Quantum Computing, Space or AI
  • Zetta Bits Per Second (Zbps): 1 Zbps = 1,000 Ebps = 1,000,000 Pbps = 1,000,000,000 Tbps = 1,000,000,000,000 Gbps = 1 Sextillion bits per second. The whole world currently transmit trillions of times Slower than one zettabit. At this speed we can copy all the data humanity has ever created in seconds
  • Yetta Bits Per Second (Ybps): 1 Ybps = 1,000 Zbps = 1,000,000 Ebps = 1,000,000,000 Pbps = 1,000,000,000,000 Tbps = 1 Septillion bits per second. At this speed we can download the entire internet in one second. We don’t have infrastructure to handle this, and unsure even if we can ever have, this might be possible in some quantum data transfer

Note: One key thing to understand is, Internet Providers measure the speed in Megabits(Mb/s) but out electronic devices like laptop shows the download speed in Megabytes(MB/s). Now if we have 100Mbps plan from the internet provider the speed of download will be only 12.5MBps, because 100 / 8 = 12.5, divide by 8 because 1 byte = 8 bits
